About our lessons
How much do driving lessons cost in Burnley?
Prices vary by instructor and lesson type. As a rough guide, typical rates in the Burnley area are in the region of £30 to £40 an hour in 2026, with automatics often a little more and block bookings cheaper per hour. Call 07817 843905 for a current quote, or read our guide to driving lesson prices in Burnley.
Do you teach manual and automatic?
Yes. Whichever you choose, you learn in a dual-controlled car with a friendly local instructor. Get in touch to check availability for your preferred type.
Which areas do you cover?
Burnley, Padiham, Nelson, Colne, Brierfield, Barrowford, Accrington, Great Harwood, Clitheroe, Rawtenstall and more across East Lancashire. We pick you up from home, work, school or college.
What do I need for my first lesson?
Your provisional driving licence (photocard) and glasses or contact lenses if you need them. That is all.
I have never driven. Can I still start?
Absolutely. Most of our learners start from scratch. We begin on quiet roads and build up at your pace.
Can you help if I am nervous?
Yes. Nervous drivers are some of our favourite people to teach. See our nervous driver lessons page for how we approach it.
Where do Burnley learners take their driving test?
Most take their practical test at the Nelson test centre on Commercial Road, a short drive from Burnley. You choose your centre when you book on GOV.UK, and we will advise.
Can I use your car for my driving test?
Yes. Test day car use and a warm-up lesson are available.
Do you offer intensive courses?
Yes. We offer intensive and semi-intensive courses, tailored after an assessment so you only pay for what you need.
How many lessons will I need?
The DVSA says learners take around 45 hours of professional lessons on average, plus private practice, but everyone is different. After your first lesson we will give you an honest estimate.
How old do I have to be to start?
You can start learning to drive a car at 17, or from 16 if you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP.
How do I know my instructor is qualified?
Anyone charging for lessons must be a DVSA-approved ADI or a registered trainee. You can check on the official DVSA register on GOV.UK.
Manual lessons
How many manual lessons will I need?
It varies a lot. The DVSA says learners take around 45 hours of professional lessons on average, plus private practice. After your first lesson we will give you an honest estimate based on how you get on.
Is a manual harder to learn than an automatic?
A manual has one extra skill, clutch control. Most learners get comfortable with it faster than they expect with structured practice. If it really does not click, switching to automatic is always an option.
Can I drive an automatic if I pass in a manual?
Yes. A manual licence covers both manual and automatic cars.
Where will you pick me up?
From home, work, college or anywhere convenient across Burnley and the surrounding East Lancashire towns.
Where do I take my manual driving test?
Most Burnley learners take their test at the Nelson test centre. You choose your centre when you book on GOV.UK, and we will advise on which suits you.
How long is a manual lesson?
Lesson length is flexible. Many learners prefer longer lessons once they are past the basics, because there is more time to practise rather than just warm up. We will recommend what suits you.
Automatic lessons
Will an automatic licence let me drive a manual?
No. An automatic test pass gives you an automatic-only licence. To drive manuals you would need to pass a manual test later.
Do automatic lessons cost more?
Automatic lessons are often a few pounds more per hour across the UK because automatic cars are costlier to run. Get in touch for a current quote for lessons in Burnley.
Do I need fewer automatic lessons?
Many learners find they need fewer hours to feel test-ready, but everyone is different. We will tell you honestly how you are progressing.
Is the test the same?
Yes. The practical test is the same standard, you just take it in an automatic car.
Can I switch from manual to automatic part-way through?
Yes. Plenty of learners switch after finding the clutch tricky. Your observation, junction and road-sense skills all carry over.
Intensive courses
Can I really pass in a week?
Some learners can, but it depends entirely on your starting point and how quickly you pick things up. Complete beginners usually need longer than someone with prior experience. We assess first and give honest advice.
Do I need to have passed my theory test first?
You must pass your theory test before you can book a practical test. We recommend sorting this before you start so your test date can follow straight on from the course.
How many hours are in an intensive course?
It depends on your level. Beginners typically need far more hours than someone who has driven before. We recommend a number after your assessment rather than selling a fixed package.
What if test dates are not available soon?
Test availability varies. We will help you check for earlier slots and cancellations so you do not lose momentum.
Are intensive courses more expensive?
The hourly rate is often similar, but you pay for a block of hours in a short period, so the upfront cost is higher. Ask for a quote for your situation.
Is a crash course the same as an intensive course?
Yes. 'Crash course', 'intensive course' and 'fast-track' all mean learning in a short, concentrated period.
Mock tests & test prep
Can I use your car for my test?
Yes. Ask about test day car use when you book your lessons.
How much does the driving test cost?
The DVSA fee for a car practical test is £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Check GOV.UK for the latest fee.
When should I book my test?
Ideally when your instructor agrees you are close to test standard. Test availability varies, so we will advise on timing.
Where is the nearest test centre to Burnley?
Most learners from Burnley test at Nelson. Check the DVSA finder when you book for the up-to-date list of centres and availability.
What are the most common reasons people fail?
Poor observation at junctions, not using mirrors, and problems with positioning and speed are among the most common faults. See our guide on common test faults.
