The DVSA average
The DVSA says learners typically need around 45 hours of professional lessons, along with around 22 hours of private practice, before they pass. That is an average, so some learners need fewer and many need more.
What changes your number
Several things make a real difference:
- Your age and starting point
- How often you have lessons (two a week usually beats one)
- Whether you practise between lessons
- How nervous you feel
- How busy your local roads are
Why regular lessons help
Skills fade between sessions, so learners who have two lessons a week and practise in between often progress much faster than those who have one a month. Intensive and semi-intensive courses work for the same reason.
How to get an honest estimate
After your first lesson or an assessment drive, a good instructor can give you a realistic estimate. Treat any promise of a guaranteed pass in a fixed number of lessons with caution.

Quick answers
Can I pass in 10 lessons?
Very few learners do. Those who have driven before or practise a lot between lessons may need fewer, but beginners usually need far more.
