How to Do Roundabouts: A Simple Guide for Learners

Approach, position, signals and exits, step by step.

The basic approach

Use mirror, signal, position, speed, look (MSPSL) on every approach. Slow down early and look right. Give way to traffic from the right, and go when there is a safe gap.

Which lane and which signal

As a general rule:

  • Turning left: approach in the left lane, signal left, stay left
  • Going straight on: no signal on approach, signal left after passing the exit before yours
  • Turning right: approach in the right lane, signal right, then signal left after passing the exit before yours

Mini roundabouts

Treat them as normal roundabouts but remember you can drive over the central marking if needed. Give way to traffic from the right.

Multi-lane and spiral roundabouts

Follow the road markings and signs on approach, and choose your lane early. Burnley, Nelson, Accrington and Blackburn have plenty of multi-lane roundabouts, which is why we practise them in lessons.
