Start small
Begin on quiet roads and build up gradually. There is no prize for rushing.
Tips that help
Try these:
- Tell your instructor exactly what worries you
- Choose an automatic if the clutch stresses you
- Have shorter lessons at first
- Practise at quiet times
- Breathe slowly before you start the engine
- Celebrate progress, not perfection
If you have had a bad experience
A crash or a harsh instructor can knock confidence. A patient instructor and a gentle restart usually make a big difference.
Test nerves
Nerves on test day are normal. Mock tests, a warm-up lesson and using a car you know all help.
