Step 1: Provisional licence
You need a provisional driving licence before you can book a theory test. Apply on GOV.UK. It costs £34 online.
Step 2: Pass your theory test
The car theory test costs £23, and you must pass it before you can book your practical test. Your theory pass certificate is valid for two years, and you must pass your practical test within that time. Always check GOV.UK for current fees.
Step 3: Book your practical test
Book through GOV.UK only. The standard fee is £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Beware of third-party sites that charge extra.
Ask your instructor before you book. They will tell you if you are ready and help plan around your lessons.
Finding earlier slots
Test slots in busy areas can book up weeks ahead. Check GOV.UK regularly for cancellations, and consider looking at nearby test centres. Most Burnley learners test at Nelson, but you can choose any centre with availability.
Changing or cancelling
You can change or cancel on GOV.UK, but you must give at least 10 working days' notice, or you lose your fee.
Last updated 30 October 2026. Fees and rules change, so always check GOV.UK for the latest.
